Question

What are the requirements to obtain a Nevada Contractor’s License?

 Answer

Nevada law requires an applicant for a contractor’s license to demonstrate a minimum of four years experience as a journeyman, foreman, supervising employee or contractor in the classification for which the license is being sought. The applicant is required to demonstrate financial responsibility. The specific requirements are set out in the application form.

How long does it take to become licensed?

  Answer

The time to process an application varies based on a number of factors such as verification of experience of the applicant; examination requirements; background investigations.

 

 

Question

Is there a temporary license or permit that would allow me to operate as a contractor until I obtain my license?

  Answer

No.  It is unlawful for any person to engage in the business or act in the capacity of a contractor or submit a bid on a job without having an active license.

 

 

Question

Why is a CPA required to prepare my financial statements?

  Answer

A CPA prepared financial statement is required to ensure uniform criteria is used to complete the statement.  CPA’s are required by law to follow national accounting standards.

 

 

Question

If I am required to maintain a bond, why do I have to pay into the Residential Recovery Fund?

  Answer

The contractor license bond provides protection for specific classes of creditors, including claims of employees of the contractor who performed labor; suppliers or other parties who may have been injured by any unlawful act or omission of the contractor.  The Residential Recovery Fund was established to provide relief to homeowners who have been harmed by contractors performing substandard work.

 

 

Question

Are licenses transferable?

  Answer

Licenses are issued to the legal entity that will conduct business in the State of Nevada.  The license is not transferable to another entity or individual, unless you have filed entity conversion documents with the Secretary of State.

Nevada law provides for the conversion of certain entity types. If an entity is converted pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 92A, the license can be transferred from the constituent entity to the resulting entity. You should consult with your legal counsel regarding plans of conversion, and whether or not such action is applicable to your business.

 

 

Question

If I am a contractor already licensed in another state will I be required to complete the entire application? 

  Answer

Yes.  Nevada has limited reciprocity agreements with the States of California, Arizona and Utah pertaining to trade examination requirements only.  All other requirements must be met. 

 

 

Question

Is a license required to perform only one job in Nevada?

  Answer

Yes.  You must be properly licensed to perform any work in Nevada.


 

 

 

Question

If my application is denied, is there an appeal process?

  Answer

Yes.  You may request a formal hearing before the Board.
